Theme: Looking Forward to the Gift of Hope
Scripture: Isaiah 40:1-5
Comfort, O comfort my people,
says your God.
2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and cry to her
that she has served her term,
that her penalty is paid,
that she has received from the Lord’s hand
double for all her sins.

3 A voice cries out:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
5 Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all people shall see it together,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Call to Worship: (based on John 1:1-5)
Leader: When all things began, the Word already was.
The Word was with God from the beginning.
People: What God was, the Word was.
Leader: All things came to be through the Word
And without God, nothing came to be.
People: All that came to be was alive with God's Word
And that life is the light of the world.
Leader: The light shines in the darkness,
People: And the darkness has never put it out!

"For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
The name that Mary and Joseph give to their son, Jesus, means "God saves." We use the name "Christ" to describe Jesus' role in God's love of the world as Messiah or Savior. Our chrismons are ornaments for our sanctuary tree that remind us of the many names and symbols we use to talk about Jesus, the Christ, son of God.
