November 3, 2013

NOTES:
Since I am roughing this out early, the hymns are suggestions. I am VERY open to changing them as long as we get changes to Tracie by October 24 (Thursday).

We have an opportunity for something musically interesting with the Roll Call of the Saints at the beginning of Communion. In the past, we have read the names of folks who passed away in the last year. Sometimes we have had a chime for each name. Other times soft music in the background. A choral or instrumental response will also work. We often use two readers to break up the singsong effect. This year, I am thinking of asking two youth/young adults who read well. What could we do to significantly mark this moment and help folks find a path from the emotion of it to the anticipatory feast of the table? Either comment here or send me an e-mail and I'll post your comments. Thanks!

FYI - I noted the musicians (no title, it is a portion of our anthem) for the Roll Call of the Saints, that info. may be included but does not have to be included in the bulletin. - Michael Merry

Theme:A Faith Worth Passing On

Scripture: I Corinthians 11:23-26 & Hebrews 12:18-24
I Corinthians 11:23-26
23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for[g] you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Hebrews 12:18-24
18 You have not come to something[f] that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word be spoken to them. 20 (For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death.” 21 Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.”) 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly[g] of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

Call to Worship:
Leader: And I looked, and there was a great crowd that no one could number.
They were from every nation, tribe, people and language.
They were standing before the throne and before the Lamb,
wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands.
And they cried out with a loud voice:
People: Victory belongs to our God who sits on the throne,
and to the Lamb!
Leader: And the angels fell face down before the throne
and worshipped God, saying:

People: Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving
and honor and power and might
be to our God forever and ever.  Amen!

Reader 2: The countless saints of history

who have blazed a trail of courage through time,

People: We remember, O God…
Reader 1: The tender touch of loved ones,

the example of heroes,

Reader 2: the healing words of comforters,

the remarkable acts of fearless ones.

People: We remember, O God…
Reader 1: The gentle strength of grandmothers,

the loyalty of friends,

the kindness of strangers,

Reader 2: the joy of children,

the sacrifice of parents.

People: We remember, O God…
Reader 1: The supreme love of Jesus,

the blessing of his Spirit,

the reminder of his words,

Reader 2: the sharing of his suffering,

the glory of his resurrection:

shown forth in the lives of all his disciples,

Reader 1: young and old,

   dead and living,

  Reader 2: articulate and silent,

   strange and familiar,

   brilliant and ordinary.

who have shown us the Lord.
